The original state award of the Russian Empire, established on April 17, 1878 by decree of Emperor Alexander II in honor of the victory over The Ottoman Empire. Light bronze, stamping. An Orthodox cross is placed in the center of the obverse, trampling the crescent moon — the central element of the composition, symbolizing the victory of the Christian army over the Muslim Ottoman Empire. The cross is surrounded by the shining rays of the sun. The year of the beginning of the war is "1877" on the left, and the year of its end is "1878" on the right. On the other side of the coin, there is traditionally a biblical quote: "NOT TO US, NOT TO US, BUT TO YOUR NAME," surrounded by laurel branches. The award was minted in three versions, depending on the status and role of the campaign participant.:
The silver medal was awarded to the direct participants of the heroic defense of the Shipka Pass, the blockade of Bayazet and the storming of the fortress of Kars.
Light bronze — it was intended for all military ranks of the land forces and the naval department, militia and volunteers who took a direct part in the fighting.T
dark bronze - issued to persons who were in the war zone, but did not take direct part in the battles (medical personnel, clergy, civil officials and front—line employees)
