A document for the rank of "regierungsrat" by F. Holze with the signature of Wilhelm II

Friedrich Wilhelm Holze was the son of Friedrich Holze and his wife Wilhelmina, nee Grillich. He studied at the Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium in Berlin, from which he graduated in 1837 with a bachelor's degree. After that, Holze studied classical philology, German literature and history at the University of Berlin. In 1840, he passed the exam for the title of senior teacher and at first worked, in particular, as a teacher's assistant at the Luisenstadt Secondary School, founded in 1836. In addition, he gave private lessons to the son of Count Adolf von Konigsmark, Adolf Hans Josef (1830-1878). Through the mediation of Adolf von Koenigsmark, he became a teacher at the Potsdam Cadet House in 1852. Having received such financial support, he was able to marry Ottilie Haak, with whom he had a long-standing relationship, on November 6, 1852. This marriage gave birth, in particular, to the lawyer Friedrich Holze. During his time in Potsdam, he became friends with Louis Schneider. After a lecture attended by Inspector General of Military Education and Enlightenment Joseph von Radowitz, Holze was transferred on May 1, 1855 to the Berlin Cadet Corps, where he taught Latin and German. Since that time, many friendships have arisen, including with the newly appointed Ludwig Herrig.

Louis Schneider stimulated Holtz's entry into the Brandenburg History Association, of which he became general secretary in 1861. Adolf Friedrich Riedel, a member of the association, was able to convince Holze to take part in the editing of the Codex Diplomaticus Brandenburgensis. After completing work on the Codex, Holze was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th degree. Through the mediation of Louis Schneider, Holze took private lessons from the son of Nikolai Vladimirovich Adlerberg, which established close relations with the Adlerberg family. After Adlerberg's private lessons were completed, in 1867 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Cadet Corps. In 1878 he became librarian of the Prussian Military Academy, succeeding Emil Gottlieb Friedlander (1805-1878). On March 21, 1880, he moved to his new office apartment at the Academy, and on April 1, 1880, he was dismissed from the cadet corps. In the spring of 1901, he said goodbye to the library and received the title of Secret Government Adviser.

A member of the Berlin History Association since 1865, Holze became an honorary member of the Berlin History Association in 1879. His extensive contacts also brought him closer to the family of Ezekiel, whose daughter Ludovika Ezekiel Holze appears in their novel Lottchen Lindholz. His work at the Berlin Historical Society led him, who received the Order of the Royal Crown of the 3rd degree in 1871, to get acquainted with Theodor Fontane, with whom he maintained a lively correspondence. Both were united by an interest in Marquesan historiography. Some of Fontane's more than 40 letters to Holze are now kept in the German Literary Archive of Marbach. Fontane usually asked in his letters for historical information about individual events and relevant literary evidence, as well as books that Holze could get for Fontane, in particular, from the collections of the libraries of the Cadet Corps and the Mark Brandenburg History Society. Fontane used these works, in particular, in his five-volume work "Wanderings along the Brandenburg Mark".
