History

The Order of St. Michael (it. Der Orden zum Heiligen Michael) — the royal award of Bavaria. The Order was established on September 29, 1693 by the Elector of Cologne, Joseph Clemens, and he also included it among the Bavarian ones as a purely religious order of the chosen Catholic nobility. Maximilian Joseph twice changed its statute in 1808 and 1810, including in its tasks the care of the defenders of the Fatherland and allowing the admission as honorary members of a limited number of persons without regard to their social and religious affiliation. The statute of 1837 finally deprived the order of its religious and aristocratic character and subordinated it to the Order of Civil Merit.
