At the end of the Austro-Prussian war, on September 20, 1866, King Wilhelm I of Prussia established crosses for officers, lower ranks and military officials " ... for the victorious campaign of 1866...»:
a) for the part of the army that participated in the Battle of Koniggratz, with the inscription " Koniggratz den 3. Juli 1866"
b) for a part of the army active in Thuringia and Southern Germany, with the inscription "Der Main-Armee 1866" (Main Army)
c) for units, officers and lower ranks that did not participate in the Battle of Königgratz and did not act as part of the Main Army, with the inscription " Treuen Kriegern 1866»

To be awarded the Koniggratz, Main-Armee, and Treuen Kriegern crosses, it was necessary to participate in at least one battle or to have a unit outside Prussia at the time of the peace. For this reason, out of the four hundred thousandth army of Prussia and its allies, only 144,000 soldiers were awarded. The Cross for non-combatants was awarded to 1,200 people.
