History

The Order of the Red Eagle (German: Roter Adlerorden) is a knightly order of the Kingdom of Prussia. He served as a reward for bravery in battle, outstanding command of troops, long and faithful service to the kingdom and other merits. The Order was granted to officers or civilians approximately equivalent to them in status, while the existing medal of the order could be awarded to non-commissioned officers, soldiers, lower civil servants and others. The predecessor of the Order of the Red Eagle was founded on November 17, 1705 by the Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth Georg Wilhelm as the Order of Sincerity (Ordre de la Sincérité), the English Order of the Garter probably served as a model for it. The Order of Sincerity soon fell out of use, but in 1712 it was restored in Brandenburg-Bayreuth. In 1734, in Brandenburg-Ansbach, Margrave Georg Friedrich Karl of Brandenburg-Kulmbach revived the Order under a new name — "The Order of the Brandenburg Red Eagle" and with a new motto "SINSERE ET CONSTANTE" ("SINCERELY AND STEADFASTLY"). On July 18, 1734, the Statutes of this order were issued. In January 1792, Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Brandenburg-Ansbach were absorbed by Prussia, while the order also passed to Prussia. On June 12, 1792, King Frederick William II gave the Order its last name — the "Order of the Red Eagle" and gave it the status of the Order of the Kingdom of Prussia, the second oldest after the Order of the Order of the Black Eagle. The Order ceased to exist with the fall of the German Empire in 1918.
