History

The Friedrich-August Medal is a state award of Saxony for awarding the lower ranks of the army for distinction in service. In the hierarchy of Saxon awards, it stood below the Military Order of St. Henry and the Medal of the Order. The medal was established on April 23, 1905 by King Frederick Augustus III. The medal had two degrees. For privates and corporals, all degrees were made of bronze, for non-commissioned officers of silver. The bronze medal had a mass of 11.4 g, the silver medal weighed 12.5 g. The medal could also be awarded to women. Medals awarded in peacetime were worn on a yellow ribbon with black stripes. Medals awarded during the First World War were worn on a yellow ribbon with blue stripes. The medal was discontinued after the end of the First World War due to the collapse of the German Empire. However, the award continued to be worn by its recipients during the years of the Third Reich and in Germany, but not in the GDR.
