History

Reserve Officers' Training Corps (English: Reserve Officers' Training Corps, abbreviated ROTC) is a college—based system for training officers of the US Armed Forces. Officers trained in this way serve in all branches of the Armed Forces (although the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard do not have their own programs in the corps, graduates serve there as well). As of 2010, 38.5% of young officers of the US Army were trained in this system, 1.8% — of the Marine Corps (through the Marine Corps of Reserve Officers Training), 16.7% — of the Navy, 38.1% — of the Air Force, a total of 30% of officers of the Department of Defense.

Students receive training based on competitiveness and personal merit. In addition to their regular studies, they receive basic military training, regular training camps and extended summer training. Upon graduation, the top 25% of graduates get the opportunity to continue their service as career officers. The remaining 75% continue to serve in the reserve. Usually the best 3-5 graduates get the opportunity to choose a specialty and a place of service. Training in the specialty takes place at the end of the program at special officer courses (Basic Officer Learder Course), which last from 3 to 7 months, depending on the specialty.

Units of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps include brigades, battalions and companies; air Force - wings, groups, squadrons and flights (flights — detachments, links), naval — in battalions. Marine Corps reserve officers are also trained in the Marine Corps. Students of the Army and Air Force Corps are called "cadets", the Naval Corps - "midshipmen".

Graduates of the army corps are required to serve 8 years, including 3 years on active duty. In the Navy Corps, this figure is 5 years (4 years for the Marine Corps). For aviation — 4 years (6 years for combat systems officers, 10 years for pilots).

Students of American colleges and universities who do not have US citizenship (including those who have a residence permit in the USA) can also study under ROTC programs, but only during the first 2 years of study and without the right to receive a special scholarship. The third and fourth years of the ROTC program are available only to US citizens, and, accordingly, only they can be awarded an officer's rank after graduation from college or university.
