Tompack, gilding, enamel. The sign consists of two parts connected by a ring. The upper shoe is made in the form of a ribbon with the inscription "EXCELLENT STUDENT" on a background of red enamel decorated with laurel branches at the bottom. The lower part is made in the form of a heraldic shield. The inscription "Cultural patronage over The Armed Forces of the USSR". In the center of the composition there is a waving red banner with a star, sickle and hammer, as well as elements symbolizing art — a musical lyre and a book.
This badge of honor was established in the USSR to reward cultural and artistic figures. The badge was awarded annually to artists, musicians, artists, writers and other cultural workers for their active and long-term assistance to commanders and political organizations in cultural services and communist education of Soviet soldiers (for example, for visiting concerts in military units, organizing exhibitions and creative meetings). The award was made by a joint decision of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Trade Union of Cultural Workers and the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. Early issues of the sign were made of heavy metal (bronze, tompack) using hot enamels and often had an ordinal number on the reverse side. Later, simpler aluminum versions were produced.
