A closed workers' cooperative (SAM) is a historical term that denoted a special form of consumer cooperation in the USSR in the early 1930s, which was created at large industrial enterprises, mines, construction sites or institutes to supply exclusively their employees. The main purpose of the SAM was to centrally distribute scarce goods and food in a card system. The service was conducted strictly according to the lists. An outsider (who is not an employee of this company) could not buy goods in the stores and distributors of such a cooperative. SAMs were formed at specific plants, factories or transport hubs. Through the SAM system, the state guaranteed to supply the working class (primarily drummers and qualified specialists) with food and manufactured goods, bypassing the open market.
