Their importance is especially great for attributing an unknown coat of arms, and establishing the ancestral or personal identity of the object on which the coat of arms with the motto is depicted.
The most complete guide to the coat of arms of the Russian Empire by the authorship of the outstanding Russian heraldist S.N. Troynitsky was published back in 1910. Since then, a lot of new data has appeared on noble and petty-bourgeois (burgher) coats of arms that existed in the Russian Empire, and their mottos. This edition most fully reflects the coat of arms mottos officially approved together with the coats of arms in the Russian Empire as of 1917, including variants and designs. A number of original (unapproved by the Russian monarchs) coat of arms mottos placed in separate lists are also taken into account. In total, the directory contains about 1,300 coat of arms mottos in Russian and foreign languages. The handbook is intended for a wide range of readers who need such a manual in their practical activities: heraldists, antiquarians, historians, local historians, employees of museums, libraries, archives and other workers of science, education and culture.
