The Order of Kutuzov is a Soviet award established during the Great Patriotic War, named in honor of Mikhail Kutuzov. The Order is preserved in the award system of the Russian Federation. The Order of Kutuzov is the second "military commander" order after the Order of Suvorov in the order of establishment and seniority. This is the only Soviet order, different degrees of which were established at different times. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 8.02.1943 establishing a military order, the order of Kutuzov III degree and the addition of the Statute of the order of Suvorov was established by the III degree of the order of Kutuzov, what brings it in line with the order of Suvorov positions will be awarded. Unlike the Order of Suvorov, the Order of Kutuzov had a more "defensive" and "staff" character, which was reflected in its Statute. It is significant that it was established by decree of July 29, 1942, the day after the signing of the famous order of Stalin No. 227 of July 28, 1942, known in the troops as the order " Not a step back!".

The decision to establish the military Orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Alexander Nevsky was made in early June 1942. The Technical Committee of the Main Quartermaster Department of the Red Army was engaged in the development of sketches of new orders. The competition for the creation of the project of the orders was attended by the artist-architect of the Main Quartermaster Department Telyatnikov I. S., artists Dmitriev S. I., Moskalev N.
