Later, the remnants of the corps fought their way through Lithuania and Belarus in the conditions of encirclement. In August, he was released from the encirclement in the Bryansk front. In September, he was appointed commander of the 8th Tank Brigade, which fought hard in the Staraya Russa area, near Kalinin, near Klin and Dmitrov, and participated in the counteroffensive near Moscow. Then in 1942 he became commander of the 7th Tank Corps. In July, he was awarded the rank of Major General, and in December of the same year, he was promoted to Lieutenant General of tank forces. In January 1943, the corps took part in the defeat of E. Manstein's group of troops and in the liberation of Rostov-on-Don. In February, Pavel Rotmistrov took command of the 5th Guards Tank Army, which distinguished itself in the Battle of Kursk. The army troops played a crucial role in defeating the enemy's strike force near Prokhorovka. In October, he was awarded the rank of Colonel-General of tank forces, and the army under his command successfully operated in the Uman-Botoshan offensive operation, defeating large enemy groups in the areas of Kirovograd and Korsun-Shevchenkovsk. In February 1944, he was awarded the rank of Marshal of the armored forces.
