The first book covers the period from the beginning of the war and the first border battles to the spring of 1943. It describes the tragedy of the encirclement of the Red Army at the beginning of the war, the defense and subsequent efforts to stabilize the front, including the events of the Battle of Stalingrad.
The second book is a continuation and is devoted to the period from the second half of 1943 (starting with the Battle of Kursk) to May 1945, ending with the defeat of the Nazi troops in Czechoslovakia.
The author describes in detail the work of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command, the actions of the armies and formations he commanded, as well as the fighting for the liberation of Western Ukraine and the Carpathians. The first edition was published in 1969 by the Nauka publishing house. Later, the book was republished several times (for example, in 1973 and 1979), often appearing in two volumes.
