Despite the fact that his presidency has been criticized as authoritarian and repression of political opponents was a cause for concern, some historians consider him a benevolent dictator. He was a popular figure both in Yugoslavia and abroad. His domestic policy, which was considered a unifying symbol, has maintained the peaceful coexistence of the peoples of the Yugoslav Federation. He attracted extra attention world that was the chief leader of the non-aligned Movement and worked with Jawaharlal Nehru in India, Gamal Abdel Nasser in Egypt, Sukarno in Indonesia and others. After Tito's death in 1980 between the Yugoslav republics began to emerge of friction. In 1991 Yugoslavia broke up, then in the territory comprising the republics began several armed conflicts, which lasted until the end of 1990-ies. Their consequences still affect the lives of the former Yugoslav republics.
