History

Nikolai Grigoryevich Lyashchenko (May 3 [16], 1910 — October 10, 2000) was a Soviet military commander, army general (1968). Hero of the Soviet Union (1990). Member of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1971-1989).


Major Lyashchenko has been in the battles of the Great Patriotic War since the very first days. Since June 25 — commander of the 2nd reserve Infantry Regiment of the 11th Infantry Brigade (Dnepropetrovsk), since July 13 — commander of the 972nd Infantry Regiment of the 255th Infantry Division in the same place. He participated in the defense of Dnepropetrovsk in August-September 1941, his regiment was the last to leave the city and blew up bridges across the Dnieper; then he participated in the Tiraspol-Melitopol and Donbass defensive operations, in the Barvenkovo-Lozovskaya offensive operation. He participated in breaking the siege of Leningrad. In March 1942, he was slightly wounded, and in July 1942, he was shell—shocked. Since March 3, 1943 — commander of the 73rd separate Marine Rifle Brigade on the Leningrad Front. From May 29, 1943, until the end of the war, he commanded the 90th Infantry Division as part of the 2nd Shock Army on the Leningrad and 2nd Belorussian fronts. He commanded the 90th Infantry Division until February 1946, then was sent to study. In February 1948, N. G. Lyashchenko graduated from the Voroshilov Higher Military Academy, and in 1957 and in 1970 — Higher Academic courses at the Voroshilov Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces. After graduating from the academy, he commanded successively the 10th mechanized Division in the 39th Army in Transbaikalia (since May 1948), the 11th Guards Rifle Corps in the Moscow Military District (since October 1953), the 12th Rifle Corps in the North Caucasus Military District (since June 1956). Since December 24, 1957, he has been the first deputy commander of the troops of the Turkestan Military District. Since November 1963 — Commander of the Volga Military District. Since December 1965, he has been the commander of the troops of the Turkestan Military District. On February 22, 1968, N. G. Lyashchenko was awarded the military rank of Army General.


Since August 1969 — Commander of the Central Asian Military District, led the strengthening of the defense of the Soviet-Chinese border after the Chinese attack in the area of Lake Zhalanashkol in 1969. Since November 1977, he has been a military inspector-adviser to the Group of General Inspectors of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded by decree of the President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev on October 4, 1990 for courage and heroism shown on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War.


Since May 1992, he has been retired. He lived in Moscow. After his retirement, he actively participated in public life, spoke a lot in the press. He died at the age of 91. He was buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery.
