History

Josip Broz Tito (May 7, 1892, Kumrovec, Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia, Austria-Hungary — May 4, 1980, Ljubljana, SR Slovenia, SFR Yugoslavia) was a Yugoslav revolutionary, political, state, military and party leader; President of Yugoslavia from 1945 until his death in 1980; leader of the Communist Party Since December 1937, Chairman of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia since 1966. During World War II, Tito was the leader of the Yugoslav partisans, often described as the most effective resistance movement in occupied Europe. He was a popular figure both in Yugoslavia and abroad. Recipient of the Soviet Order of Victory. His domestic policy, which was considered a unifying symbol, preserved the peaceful coexistence of the peoples of the Yugoslav Federation. He attracted additional world attention because he was the main leader of the Non-Aligned Movement and collaborated with Jawaharlal Nehru in India, Gamal Abdel Nasser in Egypt, Sukarno in Indonesia and others. After Tito's death in 1980, tensions began to arise between the Yugoslav republics. In 1991-1992, the SFRY ceased to exist, after which a series of armed conflicts broke out on the territory of its constituent republics, which continued until the end of the 1990s. Their consequences still have an impact on the life of the former Yugoslav republics.
