History

Vladimir Sergeyevich Seregin (July 7, 1922, Moscow — March 27, 1968, Kirzhachsky district, Vladimir region) was a military test pilot of the 1st class, colonel engineer, Hero of the Soviet Union. He died in a plane crash along with Yuri Gagarin. Born on July 7, 1922 in Moscow in the family of an employee of the Moscow Post Office. After graduating from high school in 1940, he volunteered to serve in the Red Army. In 1943, he graduated from the Tambov Military Aviation School of Pilots and was sent to the front. A participant in the Great Patriotic War, an assault aviation pilot, fought as part of the 17th Air Army, flew a low-altitude Il-2[2]. He performed combat missions during the liberation of Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Yugoslavia. He made 140 combat sorties with an assault on enemy troops, 50 reconnaissance sorties with photographing enemy targets. He conducted 19 aerial battles. On June 19, 1945, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for exemplary performance of combat missions. Member of the CPSU since 1945.

After the end of the war, Vladimir Seregin remained in the Soviet Air Force. In 1953, he graduated from the Engineering Faculty of the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy. Since 1953, he worked in test aviation, mastered the MiG-15 and MiG-17. In 1964, he was awarded the qualification of a test pilot of the 1st class. Since March 1967, he was a regimental commander at the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center, which was engaged in flight training for astronauts. He died on March 27, 1968, in a plane crash with Yuri Gagarin during a training flight on a MiG-15UTI aircraft, during which he served as an instructor. An urn with his ashes is installed in the Kremlin wall on Red Square in Moscow.
