Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (born Ulyanov; April 10 (22), 1870, Simbirsk, Russian Empire — January 21, 1924, Bolshye Gorki, Sukhanovskaya Volost, Podolsk District, Moscow Province, USSR) was a Russian revolutionary, lawyer, prominent Marxist theorist, Soviet politician and statesman. The founder of the Russian Social Democratic Workers' Party (Bolsheviks), the organizer and leader of the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, after which the Russian Civil War began, during which he initiated the policy of Red Terror, the ideologist and creator of the Third (Communist) International, the founder of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The first chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR and the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR.
