History

Vasily Vasilyevich Isaev (January 7, 1917, Khotmyzhsk, Kursk province — June 7, 1985, Kharkov) was a participant in the Soviet—Finnish War (1939-1940) and the Great Patriotic War, deputy squadron commander of the 42nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 269th Fighter Aviation Division of the 4th Air Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front, Captain of the Guard, Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born in Khotmyzhsk (now Borisov district, Belgorod region). Since 1932, after graduating from the 9th grade, he worked as a dispatcher at the Kharkov-Tovarny station; he studied at the Kharkov Railway Club of Osoaviakhim. In 1939, he was drafted into the Red Army; participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. He was a driver, then an airplane mechanic in the airfield maintenance team. In 1941, he graduated from the Zernograd Military Aviation School of Pilots, after which he served as an instructor at the Chernigov Military Aviation School. Since June 1942, he served on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He fought in the skies over Rostov-on-Don, Crimea, Poland, and Konigsberg. By January 1945, the deputy squadron commander of the 42nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (269th Fighter Aviation Division, 4th Air Army, 2nd Belorussian Front) of the Guard, Captain V. V. Isaev, had flown 241 combat missions, personally shot down 17 enemy aircraft and 5 in a group (as indicated in the award list, however, of these victories, 1 personal victory is not confirmed). On August 18, 1945, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. By May 9, 1945, the commander of the Guard squadron, Captain V. V. Isaev, had completed 313 sorties, conducted 99 air battles, in which he personally shot down 17 and 4 aircraft as part of a group. After the war, he worked as the director of a prosthetic factory in Kharkov for 15 years. He was elected a member of the Leninsky District Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, chairman of the district commission of the Peace Foundation.
