Georgy Afanasyevich Alekseenko (April 3 [16] 1917 — March 1, 1979) was a Soviet ground attack aircraft pilot, during the Great Patriotic War he was a senior lieutenant, squadron commander of the 637th Assault Aviation Regiment of the 227th Assault Aviation Division of the 2nd Air Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front. Hero of the Soviet Union (26.10.1944), Lieutenant Colonel.
Born on April 3 (16), 1917 in the village of Matorikha (now the Motorikha tract in the Nevelsky district of the Pskov region) in a peasant family. Russian. Member of the CPSU since 1943. Childhood and school years were spent in the city of Nevel. Graduated from 7th grade. He worked first in the Krasny Shchepnik artel, and then on the railroad and at the Nord sawmill. Since 1937 he lived in Velikiye Luki, Pskov region. He worked as a carpenter in the carpentry shop of the Mebelshchik artel. Graduated from the aero club. In the Red Army since 1938. In 1940, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School.
He participated in the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. The war caught Georgy Alekseenko on the southwestern border. He fought on the Southern, Voronezh, Southwestern and 1st Ukrainian fronts. He proved himself to be a brave, courageous attack aircraft pilot, and became the commander of an aviation squadron.
Squadron Commander of the 637th Assault Aviation Regiment (227th Assault Aviation Division, 2nd Air Army, 1st Ukrainian Front) By April 1944, Senior Lieutenant Georgy Alekseenko had made 110 combat sorties to attack enemy troops and military equipment, while 56 tanks and 138 vehicles were destroyed, 10 fuel depots were blown up, 7 railway trains were set on fire, and 3 enemy aircraft were shot down in aerial battles.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 26, 1944, Senior Lieutenant Georgy Afanasyevich Alekseenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for exemplary performance of combat missions of the Command at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and his bravery and heroism.
After the war, G. A. Alekseenko continued to serve in the USSR Air Force. In 1948, he was sent to DOSAAF. For about 10 years he served as the head of the flight unit and the head of the Dushanbe, Mogilev and Vitebsk aero clubs. Lieutenant Colonel G. A. Alekseenko died on March 1, 1979.
