History

Semyon Zinovievich Kalinichenko (September 17 [30], 1915, Prizovoe, Yekaterinoslav province — May 8, 1996, Moscow) was a Hero of the Soviet Union (1945), lieutenant colonel (1955), military navigator 1st class (1957). He was born on September 17 (30), 1915, on the farm of Prizov, Yurievsky volost, Pavlogradsky district, Yekaterinoslav province (now Prizovoye village, now Yuryevsky district, Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). In 1932, he graduated from the 7th grade of a school in Pavlograd (Dnipropetrovsk region), in 1935 — the 3rd year of the Kharkov Geodetic Faculty, in 1936 — the 1st year of the Kharkov Institute of Railway Transport. In the army since August 1936. He studied at the Chuguev Military Aviation School of Pilots until July 1939, and graduated from the Krasnodar Military Aviation School of Pilots and Observer Pilots in 1940. He served in the Air Force as a junior observer pilot and a bomber gunner in bomber aviation regiments (in the Orel and Transcaucasian military districts. In August 1941, as a bombardier gunner of the 6th long-range Aviation Regiment, he participated in the invasion of Iran by Soviet troops. Participant of the Great Patriotic War: in December 1941 — February 1943 — navigator of the crew and flight navigator of the 6th long-range bomber Aviation Regiment. He fought on the Crimean, North Caucasian and Transcaucasian fronts. Participated in the defense of Crimea and the Battle for the Caucasus. In December 1942, he was wounded in the left leg. In February 1943 — May 1945 — flight navigator, navigator of the aviation squadron and navigator of the 367th Bomber Aviation Regiment. He fought on the North Caucasus, 2nd Baltic, Leningrad and 1st Belorussian fronts. He participated in the Krasnodar, Novorossiysk-Taman and Riga operations, the blockade of the Courland group and the Berlin operation. During the war, he flew 250 combat missions (198 on an Il—4 bomber and 52 on a Pe-2 bomber) to attack enemy personnel and equipment. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 18, 1945, Captain Kalinichenko Semyon Zinovievich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for his courage and heroism in battle. After the war, he continued to serve in the Air Force as a navigator of the bomber aviation regiment (in the Tbilisi Military District). In 1949, he graduated from the Krasnodar Higher Officer School of Air Force Navigators. He served as a navigator of a separate reconnaissance aviation regiment (in the Belarusian Military District). Since February 1958, Lieutenant Colonel S. Z. Kalinichenko has been in reserve. In 1960-1962, he worked as a tour guide for the USSR Transport Pavilion at VDNH, in 1962-1980, he was head of the personnel department and Assistant Director for Personnel at the Light Industry Publishing house. He lived in Moscow. He died on May 8, 1996. He was buried at the Khovansky Cemetery in Moscow.
