Semyon Grigorievich Getman (1903-1985) was a Soviet assault aviation pilot, a participant in the Civil, Soviet-Finnish and Great Patriotic Wars, Hero of the Soviet Union (4.10.1941). Major General of Aviation (1.07.1944). In the active army during the Great Patriotic War — since June 1941. Despite the minimal study of the aircraft, the regiment was thrown into battle and on June 27 made the first group strike, storming a German column on the highway near Bobruisk. Operating with virtually no fighter cover, the regiment suffered heavy losses: by July 4, 19 aircraft remained in the regiment, and 20 pilots died. But the regiment remained the most combat-ready air unit on the Western Front and faced the most difficult tasks. In the first days of July, Hetman's stormtroopers destroyed 9 enemy crossings over the Berezina River, thereby delaying the advance of German troops.
On July 5 and 9, 1941, the commander of the 4th assault Aviation Regiment, Major Semyon Getman, skillfully led the actions of groups of attack aircraft during attacks on the enemy airfield in Bobruisk, as a result of which the runway was disabled and 22 enemy aircraft were destroyed. In total, by mid-August 1941, the regiment's pilots had flown 487 combat missions. Then the regiment was withdrawn for re-formation. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the 4th Division was awarded the Order of Lenin for its excellent performance of combat missions of the command on the front of the struggle against the fascist invaders and its valor and courage. 32 pilots and technicians were awarded orders and medals on this day. The regiment commander S. G. Getman was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
From September 1941, the regiment fought on the Southern Front. Participated in the Donbass-Rostov defensive and Rostov offensive operations. By order of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR dated March 7, 1942, the 4th Battalion was awarded the Guards rank and renamed the 7th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment.
From May 20, 1942 until the end of the war, Lieutenant Colonel S. G. Getman was the commander of the 230th Assault Aviation Division. Before the Victory over Germany, the division fought as part of the 4th Air Army on the Southern, Transcaucasian, North Caucasian, 4th Ukrainian and 2nd Belorussian fronts. The attack aircraft pilots of this air division participated in the Battle for the Caucasus and in the air battle in the Kuban, took an active part in the Novorossiysk-Taman, Kerch-Eltigen, Crimean, Belorussian, East Prussian, East Pomeranian, Berlin offensive operations, liberated the cities of Temryuk, Sevastopol, Mogilev, Volkovysk, Bialystok, Osovets, Ostrolenka., Chojnice, Grudzendz, Gdansk and others.
The division under the command of S. G. Hetman was one of the best assault formations of the Red Army Air Force at the front. She was awarded the honorary name "Kuban", she was awarded the Orders of the Red Banner and Suvorov, 2nd degree. Of the three assault aviation regiments that were part of the division, 2 became guards, all were awarded honorary titles and orders. 55 pilots of the division were awarded the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union. The division was mentioned 24 times in the commendation orders of the Supreme Commander. The flight crew of the division carried out 27,859 assault sorties, causing great damage to the enemy. S. G. Getman himself carried out 12 sorties leading large groups of attack aircraft, and in July 1941 he brought his Il-2 to his airfield and miraculously landed it, which was severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire.
