Ivan Petrovich Shumilov (1919-1987) was a Soviet military pilot, colonel, Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born on May 28, 1919 in the village of Mikhaylovka (now Lebedinsky district of Sumy region) in a working—class family. The Ukrainian. Member of the CPSU since 1943. He graduated from grades 7 and the Federal Law School. He worked as a locksmith at the P. L. Voikov Metallurgical Plant in Kerch. At the same time, he studied at the aero club. In the Red Army since 1937. He graduated from the 1st Kachin Military Aviation School of Pilots named after A. F. Myasnikov in 1938. He participated in the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He fought near Moscow. He flew to ground attack and cover ground troops. On December 2, 1941, in an air battle near the Istra River, he shot down two Ju-87 bombers with rockets.
On January 4, 1942, he returned as part of a group to his airfield after storming enemy positions. In the area of the city of Maloyaroslavets, he noticed an enemy column moving along the highway towards Medyn. After firing at the enemy column, he engaged in battle with two Me-109 fighters. He went to ram with one of them. He was picked up by the infantry of the 43rd Army and sent to the hospital. By February 1942, Lieutenant I. P. Shumilov had flown 112 combat missions, shot down 7 enemy aircraft and 2 in air battles. By Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On conferring the title Hero of the Soviet Union to the commanding staff of the Air Defense Forces" dated March 4, 1942, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 666) for "exemplary performance of command combat missions and bravery and heroism". In total, he flew 565 combat missions during the war, shot down from 12 to 16 enemy aircraft according to various sources (for example, there is data on 12 personal and 4 group victories), but the pilot's victories were not documented after February 1942. After the war, he continued to serve in the Air Force, was a navigator of the regiment. In 1955 he graduated from the Red Banner Air Force Academy. After the academy, he served as a senior division navigator, regimental commander, and deputy division commander. Since 1961, Colonel Shumilov has been in reserve. He lived in Moscow. He worked as an instructor pilot for the Civil Aviation Fleet, then as Deputy Chief of Flight Operations at the flight test station. He was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, two Orders of the Red Star, medals.
