History

Sergey Nikolaevich Glinsky (1913-1978) — Guard major of the Soviet Army, participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union (1945). In 1935, he graduated from the Orenburg Military School of Pilots and Pilots, after which he served there as an instructor pilot. In this position he met the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. In 1942, Glinsky graduated from the aviation advanced training courses for command personnel. In the autumn of the same year, he was sent to the active army, but it was not until May 1943 that he flew his first combat missions. He participated in the battles near Leningrad, and commanded a squadron from December 1943. On January 24, 1944, he was shot down during the bombing of the Gatchina railway junction, jumped out with a parachute, but when landing he hung on telegraph wires and was captured by the Germans. He was held in a camp in Ostrov. In February 1944, with a group of five people (all were pilots shot down in various areas of the Volkhov and Leningrad fronts), he managed to escape from a train bound for Poland. The escape was successful at the cost of the life of the sixth pilot, who shielded himself from the bullets of his comrades. On the night of February 23, 1944, in the area of the village of Visinca, all five joined the Alexander Nevsky partisan sabotage unit of the Voroshilov brigade (Belarus). On March 14, 1944, a small group of partisans took the pilots to the Begoml partisan airfield to be sent to the Mainland. Next— Sergei Glinsky returned to the location of his regiment. He participated in the battles on the Karelian Isthmus, the liberation of the Baltic States, and the battles in East Prussia.

By April 1945, Guards Major Sergei Glinsky commanded a squadron of the 34th Guards Aviation Regiment of the 276th Bomber Aviation Division of the 1st Air Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front. By that time, he had flown 146 combat missions, bombed enemy concentrations of military equipment and manpower, his defensive and artillery positions. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 29, 1945, for "exemplary performance of command tasks and displayed courage and heroism in battles with the German invaders," Guard Major Sergei Glinsky was awarded the high title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6335.
