History

Pyotr Aksentievich (according to other sources Avksentievich Yurchenko (December 12, 1918 — September 9, 1995) was a Soviet military commander, Major General of aviation, commander of the 13th Guards Dnepropetrovsk—Budapest Order of Suvorov heavy Bomber Aviation Division. Participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union (1943).He was born on December 12, 1918 in the village of Baranikovka, now Belovodsky district, Luhansk region (Ukraine), into a peasant family. The Ukrainian. He graduated from grades 7 and the Federal Law School in the city of Lugansk. He worked at a locomotive factory, studied at an aero club. In the Red Army since 1937. In 1939, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School of Pilots. In the battles of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1941. By August 1943, Captain Pyotr Yurchenko, Deputy Squadron Commander of the 9th Guards Aviation Regiment of the 7th Guards Aviation Division of the 3rd Guards Long-range Aviation Corps of the USSR Guard, had flown 290 successful sorties, 239 of them at night, to bomb military installations deep behind enemy lines, inflicting significant damage to the enemy in combat strength and military equipment.


By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated September 18, 1943, Captain Peter Aksentievich Yurchenko of the Guard was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 1740) for exemplary performance of combat missions of the command on the front of the struggle against the Nazi invaders and his courage and heroism.


After the war, P. A. Yurchenko continued to serve in the Air Force. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1955. In 1960-1969— he was the commander of the 13th Guards Dnepropetrovsk-Budapest Order of Suvorov Heavy Bomber Aviation Division (Poltava, Ukrainian SSR). Since 1969, Aviation Major General P. A. Yurchenko has been in reserve. He lived in the city of Poltava (Ukraine). Before taking a well-deserved rest, he worked at the Department of Civil Defense at the Poltava Agricultural Institute. He died on September 9, 1995.
