Georgy Osipovich Komarov (1905-1973) — Soviet military commander, participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union (1945). Major General of Aviation (1944). He took part in the Great Patriotic War from June 1941. He fought in the same regiment on the Bryansk front. From August 1941— he was commander of the 431st Assault Aviation Regiment of the 4th Reserve Aviation Group (from May 1942 - 228th Assault Aviation Division) on the Southwestern Front, from July 1942 — on the Stalingrad Front. He participated in the Donbass-Rostov defensive, in the Rostov offensive, in the Voronezh-Voroshilovgrad defensive operations and in the Battle of Stalingrad.

From August 1942, he was deputy commander, and from October 1942, commander of the 228th Assault Aviation Division on the Stalingrad Front, and from September 1942 on the Don fronts. The division fought fiercely during the defensive battle of Stalingrad and during the Soviet counteroffensive at Stalingrad. In March 1943, the division received the Guards rank and was transformed into the 2nd Guards Assault Aviation Division, which continued to be commanded by G. O. Komarov until the Victory. As part of the 16th Air Army, the division fought on the Central, Belorussian and 1st Belorussian fronts. Under his command, the division participated in an air operation to destroy German aircraft at airfields in May 1943, in the Battle of Kursk and the Battle of the Dnieper, in the Gomel-Rechitsa, Kalinkovichi-Mozyr, Rogachev-Zhlobinsk, Belorussian, Serotsky, Vistula-Oder, Kustrin, East Pomeranian and Berlin offensive operations. The division was one of the best in the assault aviation of the Red Army during the war, was twice awarded honorary titles and was called "Chernigov-Rechitskaya", in addition, it was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner and Suvorov.

The commander of the 2nd Guards Assault Aviation Division of the 16th Air Army of the 1st Belorussian Front of the Guards, Aviation Major General Georgy Komarov, distinguished himself during the Berlin offensive. In this operation, the division was ordered to support the advancing units of the 9th Tank Corps from the air, and the pilots carried out about 1,500 combat sorties to attack enemy concentrations of military equipment and manpower, as well as its defensive fortifications, inflicting heavy losses on it. General Komarov himself carried out 22 combat assault sorties during the war years.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 29, 1945, Major General of Aviation Georgy Komarov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 7390.
