History

Arseny Vasilyevich Vorozheikin (October 27 [November 9] 1914, Gorodetsky District, Nizhny Novgorod Province — May 23, 2001, Moscow) was a Soviet fighter pilot, participant in the battles on Khalkhin Gol, the Soviet-Finnish and Great Patriotic Wars, during the war, squadron commander of the 728th Fighter Aviation Regiment (256th Fighter Aviation Division, 5th Fighter Aviation Corps, 2nd Air Army, 1st Ukrainian Front), Deputy Commander of the 32nd Fighter Aviation Regiment (1944), twice Hero of the Soviet Union, First Deputy Commander of the Air Defense of the USSR Black Sea Fleet, Major General of Aviation (05/31/1954), writer.


He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1942. Since August 1942, he has participated in the battles of the Great Patriotic War on the Kalinin and Voronezh (since October 20, 1943, 1st Ukrainian) fronts. From August 1942— he was Deputy commander, and from July 1943, Commander of the fighter aviation squadron of the 728th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 256th Fighter Aviation Division of the 5th Fighter Aviation Corps in the 2nd Air Army. By January 1944, the squadron commander, Captain Vorozheikin, had flown 78 combat missions. In 32 aerial battles, he personally destroyed 19 enemy aircraft.


By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On awarding the title Hero of the Soviet Union to the officers of the Red Army Air Force" dated February 4, 1944, for "exemplary performance of combat missions of the command at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and bravery and heroism", he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold medal. In the next six months, squadron commander Vorozheikin A.V. flew 28 more sorties with participation in 14 air battles. As a result, he personally shot down 11 enemy aircraft. For these feats, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 19, 1944, Captain Vorozheikin Arseny Vasilyevich was awarded the second Gold Star Medal (No. 28). Since July 1944, he has been Deputy Commander of the 32nd Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 256th Fighter Aviation Division. Since October 1944, Vorozheikin held the position of senior instructor pilot of the Main Directorate of Combat Training of the Red Army Front-line Aviation, while continuing to fly combat missions until the end of the war.


On May 1, 1945, pilots of the 2nd Air Guard Army, Captain V. K. Novoselov and Major N. A. Malinovsky, accompanied by 16 fighters under the command of twice Hero of the Soviet Union Colonel A.V. Vorozheikin, consisting of Heroes of the Soviet Union V. N. Buyanov, I. P. Laveikin, P. I. Peskov and other pilots appeared over the Reichstag and dropped The parachutes have red panels. On one of them was written "Victory", on the reverse side — "Glory to the Soviet soldiers who hoisted the Banner of Victory over Berlin", and on the other — "Long live May 1st". In total, fighter pilot A.V. Vorozheikin has flown about 400 combat missions, 52 personally shot down enemy aircraft (6 of them on Khalkhin Gol) and 14 in the group. Since October 1945, twice Hero of the Soviet Union Vorozheikin commanded the 9th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment in the 128th Fighter Aviation Division. In December 1947 — November 1950, he was a senior inspector at the Directorate of Combat Training of Fighter Aircraft of the Soviet Army Air Force. In 1952 he graduated from the Voroshilov Higher Military Academy. From March 1953, he commanded the 108th Fighter Aviation Division in the 76th Air Army of the Leningrad Military District. In August 1953, the division in its entirety, along with its commander, was transferred from the Soviet Army to the USSR Navy and relocated to the USSR Black Sea Fleet Air Force.


He was awarded the military rank of Major General of Aviation on May 31, 1954. Since March 1955 — Assistant Commander of the Air Force of the 4th Fleet of the USSR. Since March 1956, he has been the first Deputy Commander of the Air Defense of the USSR Black Sea Fleet. Since 1957, Major General of Aviation Vorozheikin A.V. retired due to illness. He lived in Moscow and was engaged in literary activities. He died on May 23, 2001. He was buried at the Troekurovsky Cemetery in Moscow.
