History

Sergei Andreevich Apraksin (January 20, 1923, village of Atrat, Simbirsk province[1] — May 16, 1995, Moscow) was a guard major of the Soviet Army, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union (1945).

Sergey Apraksin was born on January 20, 1923 in the village of Atrat in the Cemetery parish of Alatyrsky District (now Alatyrsky Municipal District of the Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation)[1]. By nationality mordvin. He graduated from the 9th grade of school, studied at the aero club. In June 1941, Apraksin was drafted into the Red Army by the Alatyr district Military Commissariat, after which he was sent to the military aviation pilot school in Chkalov (now Orenburg). After graduating from high school in 1944, Apraksin was sent to a reserve aviation regiment. Since July 19, 1944, he served on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Flying the IL-2 aircraft, Guards Junior Lieutenant Apraksin in 1945 was a senior pilot of the 74th Guards Assault Aviation of the Stalingrad Red Banner Order of Suvorov Regiment of the 1st Guards Assault Aviation of the Stalingrad Order of Lenin, the Red Banner Order of Suvorov and the Order of Kutuzov Division of the 1st Air Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front.

He took part in the Vilnius, Kaunas, East Prussian, Insterburg-Konigsberg operations, the capture of Konigsberg and the liquidation of the East Prussian grouping of German troops, and the Zemland operation. By the end of the war, Apraksin had made 109 successful sorties, in which he personally destroyed and damaged 11 tanks, 69 vehicles, 12 artillery batteries, 47 wagons with supplies, 3 ammunition depots, 350 enemy soldiers and officers, and created 18 fires in enemy equipment concentrations. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 29, 1945, for "bravery and courage shown during assault attacks on the enemy", Junior Lieutenant Sergei Apraksin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6297.

Participated in the Victory Day Parade in Moscow on June 24, 1945. After the end of the war, he continued to serve in aviation, retiring in 1953 with the rank of Guard major. He lived in Moscow and was the head of one of the Moscow enterprises. He died on May 16, 1995. He was buried at the Mitinsky Cemetery in Moscow.
