Nikolai Semyonovich Shcherbina (January 23, 1920, Debaltseve — February 28, 1981, Zaporozhye) was a participant in the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union. Bomber pilot, Deputy squadron commander of the 36th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 202nd Bomber Aviation Division (4th Bomber Aviation Corps), Guard Lieutenant Colonel.
Born in 1920 in Debaltseve, now Donetsk region, he graduated from military college in 1940. He participated in the Great Patriotic War since June 1941 as a member of the 260th Bomber Aviation Regiment. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star for his distinction in the battles of summer and autumn 1941. He fought in the 36th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment on the Pe-2, and was deputy squadron commander. By September 1944, he had flown 169 combat missions to reconnoiter and bomb enemy forces. After the war (until 1959) he served in the Air Force in the Baltic, Carpathian, and Odessa military districts. Then — service and work in Zaporozhye. In 1953, he graduated from the Higher Officer Flight and Tactical Courses. He was sent to serve in the 748th (81st) Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment, which relocated to Tekel Airfield (Hungary) in October 1951. There he served as a squadron commander for retraining cadets of the Kirovograd Aviation School for flights on the IL-28. In 1954, the 748th Regiment was relocated to Zaporizhia. His wife (since 1947) is Nadezhda Petrovna Shcherbina. He died in 1981 and was buried in Debaltseve.
