Description

The lot includes 2 letters addressed to Soviet Marshal Mikhail Zakharov. The letter is signed by the hand of the Chief of the Finnish General Staff, T. V. Viljanen, and contains words of gratitude for the time spent together in Crimea. The lot also includes a sheet with 5 photos that was sent by a Finnish general to a Soviet marshal. History

  1. Matvey Vasilyevich Zakharov (August 5 [17], 1898, Voilovo, Tver Province — January 31, 1972, Moscow) was a Soviet military commander, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR (1960-1963, 1964-1971), Marshal of the Soviet Union (1959), twice Hero of the Soviet Union (1945, 1971). Professor (1948).

Tauno Viktor Viljanen (Finnish: Tauno Viktor Viljanen) was a Lieutenant General, Chief of the Finnish General Staff (Commander-in-Chief of the General Staff of the Finnish Defense Forces) from 1955 to 1961. He was born on September 6, 1901 in Helsinki, died on April 17, 1973. Tauno Viljanen began his career in the 1920s, graduating from Cadet School and Military Academy. By the beginning of major military conflicts, he was already an experienced General Staff officer. He served as a staff officer in the Karelian Isthmus Army Directorate in 1939-40. He held important posts in the operational department of the Headquarters of the Supreme Command of Finland in 1941-44. After the end of World War II, Colonel (and later General) Viljanen became known as a military historian. Viljanen was one of the key military advisers and assistants who helped Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim write his famous memoirs. As a historian, Viljanen checked the facts, prepared maps and collected archival data for the book. He has written several books and analytical articles on military tactics, forest warfare, and international security. His most cited historical work is "Suomen kriisi 1940-1941" ("The Crisis in Finland 1940-1941").
