The Soviet baby books of the 1940s became a unique response of book publishing to the harsh realities of the Great Patriotic War and the post-war shortage. Due to the acute shortage of paper, paints, and transportation, publishing houses (primarily Detgiz) began to mass-produce children's literature in miniature format (about 7×6 cm) on paper scraps. Despite the modest two-color printing and soft covers, these 12—page books were designed by the best authors and artists of the era - S. Marshak, A. Barto, N. Radlov, creating both patriotic stories and kind fairy tales for the psychological support of children. The small format made it possible to save millions of copies and bring the joy of reading to evacuation centers, orphanages and the front, becoming the most important bibliographic monument to the persistence of Soviet culture.
