Alexander Alexandrovich Karelin (born September 19, 1967[1], Novosibirsk, RSFSR, USSR) is a Soviet and Russian athlete, classical (Greco—Roman) wrestler, three-time winner of the Olympic Games, nine-time world champion, 12-time European champion, 13-time USSR champion, statesman and politician, deputy of the State Duma of five convocations, member of the Federation Council (since 2020), where he joined the International Affairs Committee. Member of the Presidium of the General Council of the United Russia political party. Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1988), Hero of the Russian Federation (1996).
Three-time winner of the Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996; in the category up to 130 kg), nine-time world champion (1989-1991, 1993-1995, 1997-1999), 12- multiple European Champion (1987-1991, 1993-1996, 1998-2000), Olympic silver medalist in 2000, World Junior champion in 1988, 13-time champion USSR, CIS and Russia (1988-2000). Winner of the "Absolute World Champion" Cup in 1989. He was awarded the Golden Belt four times as the best wrestler on the planet — in 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994. He was recognized as the best athlete of the year in the world. He was twice recognized as the best athlete in Russia. During his entire sports career, he won 888 fights (887 in wrestling and 1 in MMA) and suffered only two defeats. He is included in the list of the 25 best athletes in the world of the XX century. He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as an athlete who has not lost a single fight for thirteen years. And for 6 years he has not lost a single point in all official matches. There are cases when rivals refused to fight him.
