History

an article from N. Kondratiev, published in the newspaper" Znamya Pobedy "No. 101 of April 29, 1943:" - My sister writes – my son was killed. The soul burns. Let me go, Comrade Chief, to the front line. So Sergey Kargin-a soldier who served in the protection of the warehouse, came to the battle line.
The enemy is 800 meters away. Here they did not exterminate because of poor visibility, everywhere ahead – minefields.
Kargin learned to make passes. At night, feeling the trail, he crawled away to the Finnish wire. He knew every crater, hollow, bush. One day I came across an old dugout overgrown with grass. I made loopholes. The three of them went into the ambush. All three of them were worried – they could see the White Finns walking very close, not crouching or hurrying. It's time for a combat test of skill in the difficult and dangerous profession of a sniper.
... Kargin fired a shot and the soldier who was collecting cranberries fell backwards. Then Fedotov and Kirilkin fired. The Finnish corporal sprawled across the path. There was an officer nearby. Kargin took him down with a single shot.
... Once Kargin came from an ambush with swollen, purple hands from the cold. The comrade said:
"What's driving you in this weather?"
"I'm in the war, not in the country," Sergei said angrily. - Understand, the Finns think I was afraid of the weather and will climb.
Heavy sleet was falling. The greatcoat was swollen and no longer warm. There was water in my boots, and my eyes were watering. Sergey lay for the fourth hour. He started involuntarily when he heard the click of a pair of scissors to the left. Leaving the student in place, Kargin crawled to the left – there is a recess at the three Christmas trees. Finnish sappers were removing our mines. There were six of them, Kargin one. He heard the enemy shout as the first bullet sliced through the older one. Without aiming, they opened fire. Bullets cut off branches. The Belofinn did not see Kargin, but he did, and drove them back, pinning them to the ground. He brought into the dugout three Finnish hats and a rifle splattered with the enemy's blood.
... A Finnish sniper disabled three fighters. The commander ordered Kargin and Mikhailov to find and kill Lakhtar. Two days of watching friends, two days of trying different tricks, but the enemy was careful. On the third day, Kargin begged the foreman for a worn-out greatcoat and put it on a block of wood. I strapped on my helmet, attached an old flattened bucket like a thermos bottle. And then the messenger slowly crawled along the path, toward the shrubbery. Kargin smiled when he heard the shot. The bucket clattered.  He held the rope and pulled again. Two more shots and then Mikhailov's rifle thundered very close and Kargin heard his friend's exultant voice:
 - Finish the session, Seryoga. He's already silent…»
