History

"Shch-406— is a Soviet diesel-electric torpedo submarine, belongs to the X-bis series of the Shch — "Pike" project. She was laid down on December 31, 1938 at the Marti Plant No. 194 in Leningrad, launched on December 17, 1939, entered service on June 7, 1941 and became part of the KBF.

She was mobilized and entered service on 8.07.1941 in Kronstadt together with the Shch-405 submarine.

On June 13, 1942, under the command of Lieutenant Commander E. Y. Osipov, she moved from Leningrad to Kronstadt.

On the night of June 24, from the Lavensar raid, she headed for a position in the Stockholm area. On the night of June 25, in an underwater position, she hit the ground several times, damaging the light hull. The same night, while charging the batteries, she was attacked by an airplane that dropped bombs that exploded nearby. It was damaged, but the sailors under the command of the commander of the BCH-5 engineer-lieutenant Commander K. M. Maksimov eliminated them. Having forced the second Porkkala-Udd anti-submarine line, for the first time by pressing to the ground, she came to the position [2].

On July 7, the submarine "Shch-406" attacked a transport near the Heradsher lighthouse. An explosion was heard on the boat. After the attack, she was chased, but safely evaded.

On July 8, the boat damaged the German sailing and motor schooner Fidesz (545 brt) at Landsort. The schooner received extensive damage to the bow and did not sink only thanks to the cargo of timber being transported.

On July 22, the boat found two transports in the Aland Sea, guarded by four patrol boats, and fired a two-torpedo salvo at one of the transports. After the attack, she was persecuted, depth charges were dropped on her.

On July 25, the submarine "Shch-406" torpedoed an enemy transport in the Aland Sea. The transport was considered sunk (there is no foreign data confirming its death). When returning to the base, it was attacked by enemy ships. 45 depth charges were dropped on her, but she successfully evaded pursuit and arrived safely in Kronstadt on August 9. The crew stayed at sea for 36 days.

On October 20, 1942, after an inter-ship repair, under the command of Lieutenant Commander E. Y. Osipov, she entered the Danzig Bay.

On October 26, near Cape Brewsterort, the Mercator transport (4660 brt) was sunk by torpedoes (not confirmed by foreign data).

On October 29, Riksgaft torpedoed the Swedish ship Bengt Sture (872 brt) at the lighthouse and captured seven prisoners from it.

On November 11, the Finnish transport Agnes (2983 brt) was found in the same area and attacked it from a distance of 3-4 cables in an underwater position. The ship sank.

On November 13, she returned safely to the base. The crew stayed at sea for 14 days. On the evening of November 10, she arrived in Leningrad for repairs and winter parking.

On October 23, 1942, the submarine "Shch-406" was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and its commander, Lieutenant Commander E. Y. Osipov, was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

On the night of May 29, 1943, the minesweepers took the boat on another trip. Since June 1, she stopped responding by radio and subsequently did not return to the base, having gone missing. For a long time, the cause of death was unknown.

During the war, the boat made 12 torpedo attacks with the release of 18 torpedoes. 2 ships were reliably sunk and one damaged, the results of three more attacks have not been established.
