History

Jaloner badges (from the French jalon — milestone, pole; jalonner — to mark a line with icons) are small flags (flags, badges) installed by the jaloners, and serving to mark the line of construction, to indicate the place of the formation, the personnel of the formation of troops. They also had another name — Banner badges.

In the Armed Forces of Russia, during the imperial period, there were furrier, quartermaster (or quartermaster) and hundred badges, in irregular troops, ensigns and bunchukas were used. In 1819, for better controllability, and to mark the lines of construction at shows and parades, in the 1st army, I. I. Dibich (chief of Staff) introduced special, allegedly borrowed from England, banner badges made of cloth of various colors, measuring 9 ¼ × 16 vershkov, with pigtails at the end.

The military chiefs liked the innovation, and starting in 1821, the Zhalner badges were introduced into the regiments of the Life Guards, and then gradually they began to be introduced into the rest of the Russian troops, but officially the existence and coloring of the Zhalner badges was approved only in 1833, and they were introduced even into the formations of artillery troops.

In the Russian Army (RIA) of the XIX century, millionaire badges should have been in every battalion and company: battalion (divisional) — white-gold-black (white-orange-black), with the designation of the battalion number; company (squadron, hundred) — different colors.

In 1855, the pattern of the Zhalner badge was changed, namely, instead of being worn separately, they began to be made with a thin shaft without a pommel (at that time it was called a spear) and were worn in the infantry stuck into the muzzle of a soldier's gun. In the Russian cavalry, they were abolished altogether, and only in artillery continued to exist in their former form until 1860, when they were abolished in it. In 1863, quartermaster badges were abolished in all parts of the Russian Army, but millionaire badges were retained in the army and Guards infantry, while since 1870 the size and shape were set similar to the previous ones, but without a shaft and attached to a bayonet scabbard worn on a bayonet. In 1909, the millionaire's badges were ordered to be called linear.
