History

The image on the uniform buttons of the sailors of the Russian Navy appeared on January 16, 1830. From that day on, all ranks of the Maritime Department were ordered to sew buttons with State and naval symbols. According to the order, a double-headed eagle was minted on the buttons of all ranks of the Marine Guards Crew, placed on two cross-shaped admiralty anchors. Buttons with the image of one vertically placed admiralty anchor were installed for the ranks who were in naval and training crews and in the corps of naval navigators. Buttons with an anchor and two crossed cannons were introduced for naval artillery ranks. The ship's engineers and the ranks of the training crew had to sew buttons with an anchor and two crossing axes. On September 27, 1904, in "commemoration of the happy birthday of the Tsarevich," the Navy was granted the right to wear buttons with the image of a double-headed eagle placed on the crossing admiralty anchors."
