The original small leather trunk is in very good condition. The inside of the lid depicts the State Emblem of the Russian Empire (a double-headed eagle), and around it on the ribbons is an inscription in pre-revolutionary spelling: "PHYSICOMECHANIC AND OPTICIAN SCHWABE MOSCOW" and "SUPPLIER OF HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY." The company was founded in Moscow in the 1837-1840s by Swiss citizen Theodor (Fyodor Borisovich) Schwabe, who later became a Russian citizen. Initially, it was a small optics store on Kuznetsky Bridge, which eventually grew into a large workshop and factory. The honorary title of "Supplier of the Court of His Imperial Majesty" gave the right to depict the national emblem on its products and packaging. The firm "F. Schwabe was awarded this high title in 1884. The factory produced the most complex physical, geodetic, mathematical, optical and medical devices for its time (telescopes, microscopes, barometers, compasses, scales, as well as binoculars). In 1912, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company, and in 1917 it was nationalized and renamed the Geophysics plant. Today, the modern Russian optical holding company Shvabe (part of Rostec State Corporation) is considered its historical successor. Guarantee of authenticity.
