History

Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (1861-1930) — Norwegian scientist, polar explorer, politician and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.

The Norwegian polar expedition of 1893-1896 on the ship "Fram" under the leadership of Nansen pursued the goals of exploring the high latitudes of the Arctic and reaching the geographical North Pole. The expedition was a significant breakthrough in the methods of polar research. It also had political goals — the proposed lands in the area of the North Pole were to become the possessions of Norway. The success of the expedition caused a strong rise in national consciousness. Scientifically, the achievements of the expedition were the discovery of the deep-sea polar basin, which is the northern extension of the Atlantic Ocean, and the final refutation of the possibility of the existence of the northern polar continent or a large archipelago.

Nansen very quickly prepared a popular description of the expedition in two volumes "Fram over Polhavet. Den norske polarfærd 1893-1896" (1897): The 300,000-word text was ready by the end of November 1896, and its English translation by January of the following year. This book was immediately translated into German, Swedish and Russian, but was published under different titles: "In Nacht und Eis: Die norwegische Polarexpedition 1893-96"; "Farthest North" (Further North). Russian pre-revolutionary translations were usually called "In the Land of Ice and Night" (1898, 1902) and were made from both the Norwegian original and the Swedish translation. The Soviet-era translations were called "Fram" in Polar Sea" (1940, 1956, reprints 2007, 2009). The royalties from this publication made Nansen a wealthy man.
