Silver Medal "For the Defense of Sevastopol"

A rare medal in good collector's condition. The award was established on November 26, 1855 by decree of Emperor Alexander II at the height of the Crimean War (1853-1856). Historically, this is the first Russian medal that was awarded not for defeating the enemy or taking a foreign city, but for heroic defense. The medal was awarded to generals, officers, sailors and soldiers of the Sevastopol garrison, as well as civilians (including women, doctors and residents of the city) who participated in the defense on the dates indicated on the medal. The St. Petersburg Mint minted about 253,000 pieces. The award was attached to the uniform on a black and orange shoe with a St. George ribbon.

Silver, stamping. The diameter is 28 mm.The obverse depicts the monograms of Emperors Nicholas I and Alexander II, crowned with crowns. In the center of the reverse is a four-line inscription with the time frame of the siege of the city: "FROM SEPTEMBER 13, 1854 TO AUGUST 28, 1855." Around the circumference there is an inscription in large font: "FOR THE DEFENSE OF SEVASTOPOL." At the top is the symbol of the Christian faith and divine protection — the radiant "All-seeing Eye".
