The Order of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir was established on September 22, 1782 by Empress Catherine II. The Order was divided into four degrees. The order complained about military exploits and public service. Awards were made from the lowest 4th degree to the highest 1st degree. However, in the practice of awarding, this rule was often not observed. In 1783, A. V. Suvorov was one of the first to be awarded the highest 1st degree "for the annexation of various Kuban peoples to the Russian Empire."
Since 1789, a bow from the order's ribbon has been defined as an additional visible difference for the badge of the Order of the 4th degree, given for military exploits. Since 1855, orders awarded for military exploits have been joined by crossed swords passing through the middle of a cross and a star. For the military, the Order of St. Vladimir was considered the second most important after the Order of St. George.
Since 1845, holders of the Orders of St. Vladimir and St. George of all degrees became hereditary nobles, while other awards required only the highest 1st degree. On the star and crosses of all degrees, awarded to non-Christians, there is an image of a cross, letters C., P., K., B., the monogram of the name of St. Peter. At the time of the establishment of the order, it was replaced by the image of the Imperial Russian Eagle.
In 1855, the award of the Order of St. George for military service was abolished, and these awards were transferred to the Order of St. George. Vladimir. The Order of St. Vladimir began to be awarded to the ranks of the military land department, who served in officer ranks for 25 years - a cross with a bow and the inscription "25 years", for the ranks of the naval department, who completed 18 naval campaigns and attended at least one battle – a cross with a bow and the inscription "18 campaigns", and those who completed 20, although they were not in battle, there is a cross with a bow and the inscription "20 campaigns".
