History

The medal "For the Conquest of Dagestan" is a state award of Russia. It was established to commemorate the successful end of the Caucasian War. The medal "For the Conquest of Chechnya and Dagestan" was intended to be awarded to persons who were related to the final stage of the war in Chechnya and Dagestan. It was established on July 15 (27), 1860, by decree of Emperor Alexander II. The decree was given to the Minister of War. The medal was awarded to the following persons: all ranks of the army, including generals, officers, lower ranks, both combatant and non-combatant, who participated in the fighting in Chechnya and Dagestan from 1857 to 1859; local militia troops, various volunteers who participated in the battles; officials, priests and doctors who were with the troops during the period of military operations and performed their duties during combat expeditions.

A total of 145,115 medals were minted at the St. Petersburg Mint. In addition, there are variants of the medal made in private workshops. They may differ significantly from the medals issued at the mint in the details of the image and size. There are known variants made not only in silver, but also in bronze with subsequent silvering.

The medal had an eyelet for attachment to a pad or ribbon. The medal should have been worn on the chest. The ribbon of the medal is a combined St. George-Alexander ribbon. It should be distinguished from the Alexander-St. George ribbon of the medal "In memory of the Russian-Japanese War". Since August 13 (26), 1911, by decree of Nicholas II, the wounded and shell-shocked in battles were able to wear these medals on a ribbon with a bow.
