History

Medals were minted from gold (for officers) and silver (for non-commissioned officers and soldiers). The diameter of the soldiers' medals is 41 and 44 mm. The Nishtadt Peace Treaty between Russia and Sweden following the results of the Northern War of 1700-1721 was concluded on August 30, 1721. Negotiations were conducted by the Russian ambassadors Count J.V. Bruce and A.I. Osterman and the Swedish delegates Lilienstern and Stemfeldt. By this time, Russia had significant territorial acquisitions in its hands: Finland, Ingermanland, Estonia, Livonia. Russian troops landed on the territory of Sweden itself. The mediation of France did not lead to a relaxation of the terms of peace for Sweden. Peter I agreed to transfer only Finland from all occupied territories to Sweden. In addition, he agreed to pay monetary compensation for Livonia and renounce claims to the Swedish throne of the Duke of Holstein. In addition, Sweden received the right of annual duty-free import of bread from Livonia. The exchange of prisoners of war from both sides was envisaged. The Nishtadt Peace Treaty legally secured the solution of the historical task that Russia has faced since the time of Grand Duke Ivan III – access to the Baltic Sea. The medal was minted according to the size and weight of a ruble coin of that time from "home" silver found near Nerchinsk. The author of the medal is unknown, but the manner of execution is more suitable for the work of Russian masters. The medal was awarded to ordinary soldiers of the land and amphibious forces who participated in the Northern War of 1700-1721 (information from the website https://catalog.sammlung.ru/?page_id=2212#:~:text=%D0%9C%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%20%C2%AB%D0%92%20%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BC%D1%8F%D1%82%D1%8C%20%D0%9D%D0%B8%D1%88%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%B4%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE%20%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%B0,%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BB%D1%8E%D1%87%D1%91%D0%BD%2030%20%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B3%D1%83%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%201721%20%D0%B3.)
