In 1735, the Russian Empire, in alliance with Austria, declared war on Turkey. The reason was the Russian-Iranian agreement (Iran was already at war with Turkey), according to which the western and southern shores of the Caspian Sea were returned to Iran, as well as the constant raids of the Crimean Tatars into Ukraine and the campaign of the Crimean Khan to the Caucasus. In March 1736, Field Marshal B.H. Minikh developed a plan for the siege and assault of the Azov fortress. The expedition was commanded by Field Marshal P.P. Lassi. On June 17, the assault began and on July 19 the commandant of Azov entered into negotiations, and on July 20 he solemnly handed over the keys to Azov. On the occasion of the victory in Austria, silver and bronze tokens were minted, which the participants of the battle adapted to wear on their chests.
