Medal in memory of the Crimean War of 1853-1856

Light bronze, stamping. The diameter is 28 mm. The obverse depicts the monograms of Emperors Nicholas I and Alexander II. Above each monogram is a large imperial crown, above them is a shining all—seeing eye. At the bottom, under the monograms, in a semicircle, along the side of the medal, the years of the Crimean War: "1853-1854-1855-1856." On the reverse side there is a horizontal inscription in five lines, a quote from THE Psalter: O LORD, WE TRUST IN THEE, THAT WE MAY NOT LET'S BE ASHAMED OF OURSELVES. The Psalter, Kathisma 4, Psalm 30, line 2 contains this inscription: "In Thee, O Lord, I trust, let me not be ashamed forever: by thy righteousness deliver me and deliver me." The medal "In Memory of the War of 1853-1856" was awarded to a wide range of people who fought in the Crimean War and were in the rear. The design of the medal was approved on March 30, 1856. The medal was officially established on August 26, 1856, by Alexander II in a special manifesto "On the Most Gracious bestowal of favors to the people on the occasion of the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty." The medal had two versions: light bronze and dark bronze, in addition, there was a gradation according to the type of ribbon to wear. The rules for issuing medals, as well as the regulations on the rights to receive medals, have been expanded and supplemented many times. Submissions for the award could be submitted until August 26, 1859. Medals made of light bronze were awarded mainly to military personnel or direct participants in military events. Only about 1,700,000 medals in light and dark bronze were minted, including 430,000 at the Yekaterinburg Mint. The main print run was made at the St. Petersburg Mint.
