Rodina magazine was founded in 1879 in St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire. In the first issue of the magazine, the editorial board placed an advertisement for readers, in which it told about the editorial policy that it has adhered to all the years of its existence:

In 1887, Ivan Bunin's poetic debut took place in the magazine Rodina. After learning about the death of the poet Semyon Nadson, 17-year-old Ivan Bunin sent several poems to the Rodina magazine. Since December 9, 2013 — by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Federal State Budgetary Institution (FSBI) "Editorial Office of the Rodina magazine" has been attached to the FSBI "Editorial Office of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta".
