Russian Russian Army shock troops (shock battalions, death battalions, death squads, death squads, revolutionary battalions, assault battalions, shock troops) are selected units formed during the First World War in the Russian army to break through enemy defenses in trench warfare. In the spring of 1917, due to the general collapse of the Russian army, the transformation of shock units from selected special units into special military units consisting of volunteers who were ready to encourage the bulk of the army to continue the war by personal example began. During this period, the shock troops began to be used not only to break through the enemy's defenses, but also to pacify military rebellions in their own army and as defensive detachments. If before 1917 the name "shock units" was equivalent to the definition of "assault units", due to their inherent tactics of action, then after the February Revolution this phrase began to denote units "loyal to duty", and was perceived as an "honorary title" due to the moral and political tasks assigned to such units. After the October Revolution, the Soviet government, which continued the course of the Bolsheviks towards the early conclusion of a separate peace, the withdrawal of Russia from the World War and the liquidation of the former Imperial army, abolished all shock units. During the Civil War, many "shock troops" joined the White Movement.
