The Medal for Bravery was established on August 10, 1913 during the reign of the All–Russian Emperor Nicholas 2 (1894-1917). The medal was awarded to servicemen from the lower ranks of the Russian Army who showed bravery, both in a peaceful and combat situation. Civilians, subjects of the Russian Empire who committed acts of self-sacrifice, both in combat and in a peaceful environment (medical personnel), could also be presented for the award. The winners of the award were entitled to a cash payment, which was paid once a year. In the event of the death of the awarded person, the relatives (widow), the deceased or deceased serviceman, or a civilian could receive a monetary reward (only once, it was not paid further).
