History

Medal "For Bravery" — state award (medal) The Russian Empire. In the award system of the Russian Empire, there were several types of award medals with the inscription "For Bravery". The medal "For Bravery", established in 1807, was intended to reward soldiers of irregular troops and paramilitary formations (Cossack, militia, equestrian irregular, militia, police, security, guard) who do not have officer and class ranks, for differences in combat operations, as well as for feats shown in battles with violators of public order and predatory animals, both in wartime and in peacetime.

Prior to the establishment of the St. George Medal in 1913, in wartime, the medal "For Bravery" was also awarded to persons who did not have class ranks and military ranks (Red Cross employees — nurses, orderlies, etc.; volunteers from among the civilian population) for exploits shown in a combat situation, under enemy fire.

On August 10 (23), 1913, the St. George Medal (with the inscription "For Bravery") was established, ranked among the Military Order of St. George. The medal was intended to reward the lower ranks of the army and Navy for their exploits in wartime or peacetime, as well as civilians, but only for the differences they rendered in battle against the enemy. She had four degrees. Outwardly, it was similar to the medals "For Bravery" for the border guards, in dignity — below the Insignia of the Military Order, officially called the St. George Cross (but above all other medals). During the First World War, along with the St. George's Cross, the St. George Medal became the most popular award for the lower ranks of the Russian Imperial Army.
