A unique archive of photos of I.I. Chagin, commander of the imperial yacht "Shtandart", and members of his family

An extremely rare, if not unique, lot. It belonged to a very famous officer of his time – Rear Admiral Ivan Chagin, one of the heroes of the Russian-Japanese war and the commander of the country's most important yacht, the Imperial Standard. The lot includes 31 pictures, which can be conditionally divided into 5 blocks:

1. Photo portraits of Ivan Ivanovich Chagin, from the time of his studies in the naval Cadet Corps (1880) to the rank of captain of the 2nd rank. There are 5 cabinet photos and 5 visiting portraits in the form of a midshipman.

1. Photos of his brother (5 pieces) – Mitya Ivanovich Chagin (1862-1901), also a naval officer. In one of the photos, he is depicted with his wife Ekaterina Lvovna Volkova (06/1864-07/25/1913), the daughter of Lev Nikolaevich Volkov (1825-1884) and Princess Maria Mikhailovna Golitsyna (1829-1883).

1. Three photos of male members of the Chagin family: father Ivan Alekseevich Chagin (1831-1915), brother Peter Chagin (1872-1923) and another brother Alexei Chagin (1858-1911), a lieutenant in the Russian Navy.

1. 10 photos of unidentified civilians – women, children, men. All these photos also came with pictures of Chagin and with 100% probability belonged to his family members.

1. Two cabinet photos with a Japanese woman taken in Yokohama (Japan).

Ivan Ivanovich Chagin (November 12, 1860 — October 11, 1912) was a Russian rear admiral, participant in the Battle of Tsushima (commander of the cruiser Almaz), commander of the imperial yacht Shtandart. A hereditary nobleman of the Tver province. (S.N. Timirev claimed that he was one of the merchants). September 16, 1875 — Joined the Marine Corps. 1877 — Sailed on the corvette "Boyarin". 1878 — Sailing on the corvette "Gilyak". November 3, 1878 — Non-commissioned officer. April 20, 1880 — Midshipman. He was awarded the Nakhimov Prize for academic success. Sailing on the floating battery "Pervenets". August 30, 1881 — Midshipman (VP No. 24). 1881-1884 — Sailed on the cruiser Duke of Edinburgh in the Pacific Ocean. 1885 — Sailing on the clipper Pearl. January 1, 1886 — Lieutenant. May 26, 1886 — Junior mine officer of the cruiser "Memory of Mercury". September 20, 1886 — Enrolled in the mine officer class. He was appointed a teacher of the Marine Corps. December 6, 1896 — Senior officer of the cruiser Rossiya. April 8, 1899 — Captain of the 2nd rank. 1901 — At the head of the Russian landing party, he participated in the campaign to Beijing. S.N. Timirev writes in his memoirs "Four years on the yacht "Shtandart" (typescript, 1924, pp. 41-42)): "Chagin... He commanded a Russian detachment that was part of the international landing force under the general command of the British Admiral Seymour... According to Admiral Seymour, his right hand in this campaign was Captain 2nd rank Chagin, who, by the way, was fluent in English (as well as French, German and Japanese)." December 10, 1901 — Dismissed from the post of senior officer of the cruiser Rossiya. January 14, 1902[1] — Commander of the cruiser Almaz. May 17, 1902 — Chairman of the Construction Commission of the St. Petersburg Port. September 25, 1902 — April 4, 1903 — Attended the Naval Academy. 1903 — Participates in the command and staff game at the Main Naval Headquarters on the Japanese side. August 16, 1903 — Adjutant wing.

May 14, 1905 — Participated in the Battle of Tsushima. The Almaz cruiser under his command was the only large ship of the squadron that reached Vladivostok. June 6, 1905 — Surrendered command to Captain 2nd rank Ugryumov. September 27, 1905 — Member of the Commission for the revision of the "Regulations on Maritime Censorship". November 7, 1905 — Commander of the Imperial yacht "Standard". April 2, 1906 — Captain of the 1st rank. March 29, 1909 — Rear Admiral appointed to the retinue of His Imperial Majesty.

In the autumn of 1912, he shot himself. S.N. Timirev, who served with him on the yacht "Standard", wrote: "Chagin's suicide... at the time, it caused a lot of talk and gossip...In fact, the reason for his suicide was purely romantic... The beginning of the novel, which had such a tragic end, happened before my eyes" ("Four years on the yacht "Shtandart", 1924, typescript, p. 43). However, the most widespread version was that the cause of suicide was the identification of Socialist revolutionaries in the crew of the Shtandart, who printed revolutionary proclamations on the letterheads of the Shtandart in the ship's printing house. He was buried at the Nikolsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. A monument has been erected at the burial site. In 2019, the monument to Rear Admiral Ivan Chagin was restored. The restoration of the monument was carried out according to the project of I. I. Chagin's relative, Stanislav Chagin.
