Cabinet-portrait. The oldest of the Turkestani infantry battalions was formed in 1865 in the Orenburg military district as the Orenburg infantry battalion. In 1867, in connection with the establishment of the Turkestan military district, the battalion was renamed the Turkestan rifle, and in 1870 with the formation of the Turkestan rifle brigade got the name of the 1st Turkestan infantry, which wore down to the reformation in 1910 the regiment. The battalion took part in many important military events of the late 1860s – early 1880s during the conquest of Turkestan – from the storming of Ura-Tyube and Dzhizak (1866) until the conquest of the Kokand khanate. Throughout its existence, the battalion was stationed in Tashkent.
